Location: Tucked away just southeast of the downtown core. If you are in Riverdale you are surrounded by nature, with views of the North Saskatchewan River or the valley escarpment.
History: Originally called Fraser Flats, this community was valued by our city’s earliest settlers for its proximity to the river. It quickly became home to a lumber yard, coal mine and brick yard.
Highlights: The ideal neighbourhood for the outdoor enthusiast with unbeatable river valley park and golf course access. Voted by Avenue Magazine’s readers as one Edmonton’s top neighborhoods in 2015 for its picturesque views, proximity to downtown and community charm.
We asked Ward 6 Councillor Scott McKeen what makes Riverdale a great community:
“Riverdale captures the feel of a small town, tucked almost magically inside a bustling city. The honk and roar of the city disappears as you meander down road or pathway into Riverdale, with its slow streets, old trees and front verandas. I’m not sure there is a community with more diversity of architecture, ages and political philosophy. Set below and back from times boom or bust. Next to the river, flowered in summer or powdered in snow, it is a place of retreat and relief, activism and belief. I love Riverdale.”
Laurel Gregory, reporter for Global Edmonton, had this to say about being a resident of Riverdale:
“I have never lived in a neighbourhood as magical as Riverdale. There’s something so special about it. Every time I drive down Cameron Avenue and leave the hustle and bustle of the City, I feel like I’m driving into a safe haven.
Every time I make that drive I think: I’m so lucky to live here.
Riverdale seems to showcase the very best of every season. In the summer, the whole neighbourhood smells like one big lilac bush. In Fall, blankets of multi-coloured leaves cover the streets and crunch under your feet.
The trails are so well-kept that even in the dead of winter, you can explore the river valley right outside your front door.
Riverdale also has an incredible sense of community. People know their neighbours. We pick up milk at the store for each other. We sit on each other’s porches for a glass of wine in the summer. In just five years, our neighbours have become like family. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”
